When a refugee family, or individual, is chosen by Danby SAH to sponsor there is usually a cosponsor who is asked to put together a Settlement Proposal. In this Proposal they are required to create a Settlement Team of between 5 and 9 people that have agreed to help the family for the first 12 months they are in Canada.
A Settlement Volunteer oversees the cosponsor and Settlement Team to ensure that the newcomer(s) are having their needs fulfilled and are able to access all that Canada has to offer. This is an important role that is the liaison between Danby SAH and the Settlement Team. This is a time flexible role and would require approximately 5 hours per month for each Settlement Team you oversee.
Settlement Volunteers responsibilities:
- Meet the Settlement Team before the refugee family arrives and confirm that everyone understands their roles and responsibilities during the settlement year.
- Provide the newcomers with their rights and responsibilities as a Permanent Resident of Canada
- Sends the Settlement Team emails at set intervals to explain what to expect next or confirm tasks have been completed.
- Verifies that the Settlement Team completes and returns all required checklists.
- Does a minimum of two home visits during the settlement year.
To be a Settlement Volunteer you must be:
- Willing to attend training.
- Willing to commit to oversee Settlement Teams for the settlement year.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Agree to a Vulnerable Sector Police Check.
- Comfortable with using technology and have access to internet and email.
